Bangkok - "The City of Angels"

A visit to Bangkok should be part of any Thailand travel experience

The term "City of Angels" conjures up an old world image with a gathering of monks making their way in dreamy contemplation to a the Thailand Royal Grand Palace.

Bangkok Thailand City Scape

Although there are pockets of peace, the reality is far from this and it's fantastic.

Wherever you turn there is a visible struggle of modernisation against a backdrop of traditional Thai culture.

Outside of the futuristic shopping centres and Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport you will never be far away from the aroma of a street stall where you can eat local delicacies for loose change.

The city has approximately 10 million inhabitants; to an outsider it may seem like mayhem with people, cars, tuk tuks, buses and taxis in a sea of chaos, but ....... somehow, out of chaos come a degree of order.

Tourists are very well catered for and you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a hotel.

The recently built BTS Skytrain has made travelling around the city so much easier and will soon be extended to the main international airport.

You will not get bored if City life appeals to you.

As with any major city, Bangkok has so many places to visit and the diversity of activities means that it really will cater for your individual tastes.

Everyone’s Favourites:

  • Siam Square - Just a stones throw away from some major shopping centres and home to the Hard Rock Cafe and some great night life, well worth a visit.
  • Thailand Bangkok Street Cooking

  • Grand Palace - This is the no.1 tourist spot for sheer opulence, built by King Rama 1
  • Chao Phraya River - It's so easy to use the river bus services to visit some of the main attractions.
  • Shopping Centres - Too many to mention them all, the more popular ones are centred around Siam Square, Silom and Sukhumvit
  • Chinatown - If you love to wander around various alleys and lanes to experience some unusual food and interesting shops, this is a must
  • Old City - This area is awash with Palaces and Temples. Worth a visit before controversial plans are implemented to make this a modern tourist area

Some other areas of the capital are very popular with tourists but not to everyone's taste:

Patpong is infamous for sex shows, go go bars and prostitution. Worth a visit for novelty value but some people may find the experience a little disturbing.
