Grand Palace Bangkok
For sheer opulence you will be hard pressed to beat the Grand Palace Bangkok, this is the city's no.1 tourist attraction.
Emerald BuddhaThe Bangkok Grand Palace is also known as the 'Temple of the Emerald Buddha' which also happens to be the main attraction in the complex. The Buddha, which is only a few feet in height (or 66cm) is clothed in different robes that represent each season which are changed by Royalty (usually the King or more recently the Crown Prince) at the beginning of each season.
Any taxi or Tuk Tuk would be happy to take you there but don't let them suggest anywhere else on the way.
The Emerald Buddha is highly revered in Buddhism and came to prominence in the 15th century. In the 16th century it was stolen by Laotians and remained in Laos for a further 200 years until it was 'liberated' and moved to Bangkok by King Taksin.
Grand Palace GroundsThe grounds of the Bangkok Grand Palace are large enough for an afternoons exercise if you really want to see it all. The area of the Grand Palace totals 233 acres and holds more than 100 buildings. That's a lot of photographs so make sure your camera battery is fully charged and carry a spare! The buildings and grounds are meticulously maintained and the Thai temples within the Complex are some of the most stunning in the land. Top tip - Try to visit the Grand Palace Bangkok when the weather is not too hot! We took some friends there in April when the weather is at its most humid the temperatures go through the roof! Novemeber to January are great when it's not too hot and the rain is minimal.
Getting thereIf your hotel is near the Chao Phraya River you can catch an express boat to the Tha Chang stop and enjoy the sights on the way. Buses are also available from the Siam Square area near the MBK shopping centre. Any taxi or Tuk Tuk would be happy to take you there but don't let them suggest anywhere else on the way.
Dress SenseWhen you visit the Grand Palace Bangkok and some other revered sites in Bangkok you will be expected to dress appropriately.
- Shorts or are not permitted for men or women,
neither are skirts showing your legs. If you are not dressed correctly you will be asked to wear a 'sarong' pictured here and modelled by my friend; Vicky who was not aware of the rules
- We are not sure what they would provide the men but with the size of same tourists it may be best not to try it out, they may be a tight fit and could make your visit 'uncomfortable'
- You will also be expected to cover your shoulders so no 'vests' please gentlemen. As for the ladies, best not to wear a revealing top however eye catching we may find it!
- Remember to take off your footware before entering any building and try not to point your feet at religious symbols
Opening TimesExcept for the odd afternoon, the Grand Palace Bangkok is open to the public most days of the year from 8.30am to 3.30pm.
Guided ToursYou can join a guided tour organised from within the Grand Palace. These are well organised and will show you all the main attractions
ScamsSadly, there are a minority of con artists that prey on innocent tourists. When you are on your way to the Grand Palace Bangkok just follow these simple rules: - Don't believe anyone outside the complex who tells you it is closed and offers to take you elsewhere
- Don't accept a guided tour from someone who is outside the grounds, wait until you get in
