Rayong Thailand - Our Latest Discovery

Rayong Thailand was unknown territory to us until recently. After much deliberation (and because we could use our air miles) we stayed at the Novotel Rim Pae Rayong. Lucky us!

Rim Pae is not one of the more famous Thai Resorts but it gets a special mention here because of the idyllic short break we spent there in November 2009.

Rayong Thailand - Rim Pae Beach

We have seen some magnificent sunsets in our life from many parts of the World, but none as spectacular as we saw at Rim Pae.

Favourite Rayong Thailand Hotel

Ours is the Novotel Rim Pae Rayong Hotel, of course, with its idyllic private beach and excellent facilities. Novotel Rayong Thailand

The beach is just a hop and a skip from the pool area and you don't have to pay for the sun beds and shades!

As you can guess - we loved it!

Have your say!

This website is not all about us, Rayong Thailand has so much to offer and you may be able offer a gem of information.

New to Thailand?

If you are new to Rayong Thailand and need to know more, we have a few suggestions of our own to get you started.

Restaurants

Walk out the front of the Novotel Rim Pae Rayong, cross the road and you can eat out at a very reasonable price.

This ideally located restaurant is 50 meters from the front of the hotel and it always attracts guests from the Novotel who need a break from the hotel cuisine or just want to get a reasonably priced meal without paying the hotel premium rate.

We are wondering how long it will be before a few more spring up:-)

A short drive west along the coast will bring you to Ban Pae, a local fishing village where you can enjoy a catch of the day!

As you can imagine, there is no shortage of sea food restaurants, many located on the sea front where the waves almost lap onto your feet. Of course, you get a great view of where your meal came from!

You will find enough decent restaurants along the coast from Ban Phe beach to Mae Pim beach that it could keep you busy for a month.

Alternatively, if could venture in Rayong town there are plenty of restaurants catering for all nationalities. If you have a favourite restaurant in Rayong Thailand that's worthy of a review, we would love to hear about it.

Weather in Rayong and Rim Pae

We visited Rayong Thailand in November when the temperature is little on the 'cool' side for Thai People at a chilly 26-28 degrees centigrade. Perfect for us and there was so little humidity that we were almost believed it was the South of France. Novotel Hotel Pool Rayong Thailand

As with most Thai resorts, the best times to visit are from November (the end of the rainy season) until Early March, just before it gets too hot. If your holiday is largely water sport related then the heat of April should not deter you.

The area of Rayong Thailand is a few degrees cooler than the South (Phuket) with less humidity making it very comfortable for us.

All the resorts are open all year if you don't mind a holiday during the wet seasons (from July to October) when the amount of rain can be a lottery. There tends to be less rain in Koh Samet island which has its own mini climate.

Attractions and Suggested Days Out

Rim Pae itself is very quiet, but you can still enjoy countless days out by either driving along the coast and discovering the area for yourself (as we did), or going on the usual organised excursions, all bookable at the Novotel.

Any Rayong Thailand Hotel is in striking distance of some great beaches, islands or attractions.

Koh Samet

Koh Samet is a paradise island about 6km from the fishing port of Ban Pae; you can catch a ferry from Ban Pae that takes about 40 minutes to reach the island.

The island itself is about 7 km long and 3 km wide (in the north, and tapers out nearer the south) and the island has now been designated as part of the Khao Laem Ya national park.

If relaxing is your thing, this is the place for you, the island is not busy, especially in the south where these is also some great diving. Should you wish to go diving, there are plenty of establishments available for this, but it's probably advisable to book if you are only visiting Koh Samet for a day or two.

Narim Beach

We drove from Rim Pae to Narim Beach to meet some friends we had not seen for a while and what a lovely day it was. The sea front is tree lined so there is plenty of natural shade and we bagged a big restaurant table on the beach for the whole day.

Rayong Thailand Narim Beach

They were quite happy for us to use it as the beach was not crowded during the Thai winter, although they told us it gets quite busy in the summer when Thais take their holiday. That is perfect for us, as we tend to go to cooler parts of Thailand in the summer.

I borrowed a bike a trundled down to the east side of the beach where there seemed to be a gathering of customised cars showing off their expensive sound systems, not too rowdy though and they were more than pleased to demonstrate their new toys.

Narim beach is about one hours drive east of Rim Pae and you pass through Rayong Town on the journey.... time for shopping on the way home.

Khao Wong Caves

They are situated caves are in a large tropical rain forest area but can be easily missed if you don't know they are there!

There are 60-80 caves in this area according to who you believe.

The guided tours - highly recommended are available when you arrive at the foot of the hills.

The area covers hundreds of square acres and there are only about 20 caves open to the public.

During the rainy season, caving can be hazardous due to flash flooding so this makes it doubly important to ensure you have a guide! The Caves are in a national park in the Talang District; about 12 km from highway marker 288 on Sukhumvit Road.

We will definitely be going back there, lovely atmosphere (Thais on holiday), great food and low prices - we like that.

Find that Rayong Hotel - The Road to Rim Pae

- From Bangkok allow 2.5 hours to cover the 200 km.
  • Expressway 9 to Chonburi
  • Expressway 344 to Klaeng
  • Turn right at Klaeng, follow the Sukhumvit Road
  • Turn Left on the 3192
  • After 5 minute drive turn left on 3145 towards Rim Pae
From Pattaya allow about 1 to 1.5 hours to cover the 100 km.
  • Expressway 36 to Rayong
  • Expressway 3 towards Ban Pae
  • Turn right on the 3192
  • After 5 minute drive turn left on 3145 towards Rim Pae

Whatever Rayong Thailand resort or hotel you choose for your holiday, we are pretty sure that the location will have something unique to offer. If you are heading for Rim Pae, See you there later this year, we will be going back.

Top Tip - When you get to your destination you will want to plan your holiday. Any major Rayong hotel will have booking office where you can plan your excursions. The major towns will have booking offices where you can probably negotiate a better rate for your trip (if you can be bothered to drive to them).
