Thai Royal Family

Thai people show great respect to the Thai Royal Family and expect foreigners to do the same. The King of Thailand especially is highly revered and you will see pictures of His Majesty wherever you visit in Thailand.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) His Majesty is the reigning King of Thailand is and was crowned on 9 June 1946; however the coronation did not take place until 1950 when His Majesty completed his education in Switzerland

Her Majesty Queen Sirikit Her Majesty is the Queen of Thailand and married the King in 1950 after meeting him in Switzerland during her studies.

The King and Queen have three children:

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn. His Royal Highness is the only son of the King and Queen and heir to the throne. The Crown Prince often represents the King on duties (too numerous to list) at home and abroad

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. Her Royal Highness works tirelessly to follow in her fathers footsteps and is greatly admired in Thailand.

Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn. Her Royal Highness is the youngest daughter of the King and Queen and is also involved in many projects.

Top Tips:

  • If you are in Thailand on the Kings Birthday (5th December), join in the celebrations.

See some pictures of Thai people celebrating this special day.

  • If you live or work in Thailand, it is appreciated when you hang pictures of the Thai Royal Family in an appropriately high place.
  • If you happen to be in Siam Square in Bangkok the national anthem is played every day at 6pm. If you see people standing still during the playing of the national anthem then it would be most appreciated by the Thais if you did the same.
  • In cinemas throughout Thailand, when he national anthem is played everyone is expected to stand (do you remember when we all used to do that in our countries). Your gesture is always appreciated.
  • It would be inadvisable to show any disrespect towards the King of Thailand or in fact any of the Thai Royals, not only because it would offend most Thais, but you may well be committing a criminal offence called lese majeste.

There are many recorded instances of foreigners who came unstuck because they chose to ignore or disregarded the lese majeste law.

Notably a Swiss man was recently jailed in the North of Thailand for spraying black paint over several portraits of the King, but the King being a merciful person gave him a pardon. However, if you were in his position you would not want to stay in Thailand thereafter.
