Getting Around - Travel in Thailand

Wherever you want to travel in Thailand there is form of transport to meet your needs. And whatever form of transport you choose you can always find a bargain.

Getting around in Bangkok

The capital city: Bangkok, has a vast transport network and it's relatively easy to get to anywhere in the country by road, rail, air or water; depending on how quickly you need to get there.

Knowing which options are available can make your Thai travel experience a great one. Thailand Travel -tuk_tuk

Tuk tuks - The form of transport that is synonymous of travel in Thailand is the tuk tuk. You can find a tuk tuk in most towns and cities in Thailand.

The most familiar kind of tuk tuk in Thailand is the three wheeled version and they are in every street in Bangkok.

These types of tuk tuks are relatively cheap and used extensively by locals; in Bangkok there is so much competition that you can easily negotiate a very good price.

They are great for local journeys but you would not want to use them for journeys of 20 minutes or more!!

Bangkok Skytrain - The skytrain is the most recent and welcomed for of tranport in Bangkok. You can travel in air conditioned comfort over the traffic and the fares are still cheap.

The sky train is fast becoming the most popular method of transport in Bangkok. Thailand Travel - SkytrainIt gets our vote because it is clean, comfortable, very convenient, reliable and cheap. No traffic jams in these babys!

Taxis - Until the introduction of the sky-train, taxis were the air conditioned transport of choice around Bangkok. with the competition form the skytrain, the taxi drivers are now finding it harder to make ends meet.

The taxi's virtual monopoly on airport transport will soon end when the skytrain links Central Bangkok with the main international airport; Suvarnabhumi (pronounced suwanapum - or at least that's what it sounds like to us).

Chao Phraya River - The river offers many forms of transport and it's can be a relatively tranquil and relaxing way to make your journey; unless of course you get a long tailed boat, then hold on to your hats.

Bangkok Buses - Not our favourite way to get around the city as the buses are 'functional' and crowded. However, they are dirt cheap and form an essential part of Bangkok's transport network by ferrying around millions of Thai nationals around Bangkok every day.

Nationwide Travel in Thailand

The Country's bus network is very extensive and cheap making it a great way to Travel in Thailand. Thailand Travel - bus

We live in Korat, a good 3 hour journey that only costs about 250baht on the bus. The buses have plenty of leg room, unlike the UK's national express where even short people seem to suffer with leg space.

The services are regular and seem to be more punctual than many Western European countries.

The buses travel from Bangkok to most major cities and have on board toilets... not the greatest but sufficient. You are usually served with soft drinks and biscuits during the journeys on inter-city. Wherever you travel in Thailand, the bus service is never far away.

The Taxis around Thailand are, with a very few exceptions, reasonably comfortable and quite good value for money.

Thailand Travel - taxiIn cities where taxis operate, taxis will generally be metered.

When you journey out of the city, there are fixed price menus in the taxi. No haggling involved... unless of course you want to. There is always a deal to strike in Thailand.

When I travel from the airport to my home in Korat (no less than a 3 hour drive) it will cost 2000 to 2500 baht, approx 60-70 US Dollars or 35-45 ŁUK ...... after a small amount of haggling. What a bargain!! and so much more convenient going to the centre of Bangkok to catch a bus.

Air Travel in Thailand is Beyond the cost of millions of Thais but still reasonable value for money for tourists and affluent Thais. it is possible to fly between most major cites; certainly from Bangkok.

Rural Travel in Thailand

There are other familiar and less well known types of tuk tuk; The other less well known (and totally cool) type of tuk tuk is operated in the Thai countryside; Thailand tuk tuk in Korat these are used not only to transport people; they also double up as farm utility trucks to transport anything from rice to farm machinery.

These tuk tuks are so named because of the 'tuk tuk' sound their engines make, whereas the tuk tuks used in towns and cites are so called because it means 'cheap cheap'. the tourist resorts such as Phuket have the 4 wheeled version.

Top Tip - Although relatively cheap for tourists, the prices of Patong tuk tuks have started to escalate in some areas of the popular beach resort of Patong Beach where there seems to be a dubious price fixing scam.

If you don't like the price take a side turning and find one in that is not in a 'prime location'
